Practical guide for everything a new owner asks on day one — starting the car, gear selector, drive modes, infotainment, driver aids, and easy-to-miss features.

How to start it

Unlock with the physical key, switch the immobilizer off, select neutral, press the clutch, and turn the ignition key. There is no touchscreen wake-up, digital key, or silent ready state — the BMW V12 simply starts like a 1990s analog supercar.

Where the gear selector is (and how to use it)

The McLaren F1 uses a conventional six-speed manual shifter to the driver's right, with a clutch pedal and no automatic mode. Select neutral before start-up, press the clutch, then engage 1st like any traditional manual performance car.

Drive modes

There are no selectable drive modes. Throttle response, steering effort, brake feel, and damping are mechanical rather than software-configurable.

Instruments

Analog gauge cluster centered on tachometer and speedometer; warning lights handle the rest. No reconfigurable digital layouts, no head-up display, no thumb-wheel menus.

Infotainment & voice control

Factory audio is AM/FM/cassette (CD changer on late-90s flagships). No touchscreen, no nav, no Bluetooth — connectivity features did not exist on the original car.

Driver assistance

Electronic driver assistance is either absent or extremely limited by modern standards. Do not expect adaptive cruise, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, surround cameras, or stability-control intervention; leave extra space and warm the tires before driving quickly.

Fueling

Premium unleaded (91 or 93 octane) is required on McLaren performance models — the engine timing is set for it and lower octane causes audible knock and reduced power. Fuel-cap release is a button on the driver door panel; the cap is capless (just push the nozzle in).

Keys

Cut metal key with immobilizer chip on most post-1993 cars. No remote-app access, no shareable digital keys, no wallet credentials.

First-week tips & easy-to-miss features

A few things every new owner tells us they wish they'd known on day one:

  • Bring the fluids, tires, and brakes fully up to temperature before using high rpm; the F1 has no electronic safety net if the rear tires break loose.
  • Practice the central driving position and pedal offset at low speed before entering traffic — sightlines are excellent, but the layout is unlike a normal left- or right-hand-drive car.
  • Verify any phone, navigation, Bluetooth, or camera features as aftermarket additions; they were not part of the original 1990s factory interface.
