How it came to be
Mitsubishi Electric demonstrated the first camera-based lane-detection system on the 1992 Debonair, but it only warned the driver. Nissan and Honda were first to actively steer the car back into its lane. European makers picked the technology up around 2007 (Citroën C4, Lexus LS460), and by the 2010s it had merged with adaptive cruise control to form 'lane centering' — the foundation for Tesla Autopilot, GM Super Cruise and Ford BlueCruise.

How it sees the road
A forward camera (usually in the windshield base near the rearview mirror) tracks lane lines using contrast detection. Some cars (Tesla, Mercedes EQS) also use map data and other vehicles' tracks as backup when lines are faded or missing.
Warning vs assist
Lane Departure Warning beeps or vibrates the wheel/seat when you cross a line. Lane Keep Assist gently adds steering torque to nudge you back. Lane Centering Assist (Tesla Autopilot, GM Super Cruise, Ford BlueCruise) actively keeps you in the middle of the lane.
What it can't do
Heavy rain, snow, dirt on the camera, faded or missing lines, construction zones with conflicting markings — all degrade or disable the system. Always keep your hands on the wheel; assist is not autonomy.
Turning it off
Many drivers find the system intrusive on twisty roads where they intentionally cut apexes. Every car has a quick disable — usually a steering-wheel button or one tap in the driver-assist menu. The setting often resets on each start, which is deliberate.
