History

How it came to be

Lap belts existed in aircraft and a few US cars from the 1950s, but they often caused abdominal injuries in serious crashes. Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin — previously an ejection-seat designer at Saab aircraft — invented the modern V-shaped three-point belt in 1958. Volvo patented it the following year and then, in a decision now regarded as one of the most important in safety history, released the patent for free use by every other automaker.

How it works

A three-point seatbelt spreads crash forces across the strongest parts of your body — the pelvis and the rib cage — instead of the soft abdomen. A retractor reel locks under sudden deceleration (or sometimes by pulling fast), holding you in place against the seat.

Pretensioners

In a serious crash, a small pyrotechnic charge fires in the buckle or retractor, yanking slack out of the belt before the airbag deploys. This pulls you tight against the seat so your head and chest meet the airbag at the right speed and angle.

Load limiters

Once the belt is tight, a load limiter allows it to pay out a small, controlled amount of webbing if forces exceed a threshold. This caps chest pressure to prevent broken ribs and sternum injuries while still keeping you in the seat.

Wear it correctly

The lap belt must sit low across the pelvis, not the belly. The shoulder belt should cross the collarbone and chest, never behind the back or under the arm. A correctly-worn seatbelt reduces fatal injury risk by about 45% for front-seat occupants.
