History

How it came to be

Bosch engineer Anton van Zanten began researching vehicle dynamics control in the 1980s. The system became famous in 1997 after the Mercedes A-Class failed Sweden's 'moose test' and rolled over — Mercedes responded by making ESP standard on every model, the first manufacturer to do so. Toyota's VSC, BMW's DSC and GM's StabiliTrak followed using similar principles. Studies by NHTSA and Euro NCAP later showed ESC prevents roughly one-third of fatal single-vehicle crashes, and it was made mandatory in the US (2012) and EU (2014).

What it does

A yaw sensor measures how fast the car is rotating around its vertical axis. A steering-angle sensor knows where you've pointed the wheels. If those two disagree (the car is sliding differently than you intend), ESC brakes one or more wheels and cuts power to restore alignment.

Understeer correction

If the car plows straight when you've turned in, ESC brakes the inside rear wheel to pivot the nose toward where you're steering. You feel a thump and the car tucks in.

Oversteer correction

If the back is sliding wide, ESC brakes the outside front wheel to swing the nose back outward, killing the slide. This is the more dramatic intervention and is what saves countless rear-drive cars from spinning in the wet.

Sport modes and disable

Every performance car (Porsche PSM Sport, BMW MDM, Ferrari CT-Off) lets you raise the intervention thresholds so the car drifts a little before the system steps in. Fully off is reserved for closed circuits — ESC has been mandatory equipment in the EU since 2014 and the US since 2012.
